I’m not a huge fan of country overall, but I’m a fan of well-written, well-constructed and catchy songs.
That’s not to say that country as a whole doesn’t fall into that category, and like any other genre I don’t primarily listen to, I respect that it’s art, just not art that resonates with me personally.
First of all, I love Dwight Yoakam. I am a Dwight Yoakam fan. He’s got a great voice that really flows nicely with the rockabilly guitar and borderline punk drumming style of his music(the upcoming song is a bad example of this, but whatever)and he writes catchy songs with amazing lyrics. This is one of my faves:
Hank Williams Jr. had some really great songs in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Has anyone ever written a better line than “I’d love to spit some Beech Nut in that dude’s eye, and shoot him with my ol’ .45?” I think not.
Now here’s a perfect song: catchy verse, catchy bridge, catchy hook and flawless transitions between each.
The Highwaymen was a country supergroup comprised of Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. This song is amazing:
Kris Kristofferson is deep.
