I don’t know how to answer that question. Where would I even start? I have an encyclopedic knowledge of rock n’ roll from the ’50s-’90s, same with metal from Black Sabbath to now: thrash, power, death, black, grind etc. I love death and power metal and trad metal. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of rap(my favorite one of the four elements of hip hop)from about 83-2002. Love Wu-Tang, Public Enemy, Ice-T, A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Snoop, Cube, LL, etc etc etc. I’m a huge film score fan, particularly John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I’ve stood in Elvis’s living room and I read Elvis biography available when I was ten. I love stuff like the stones, ’70s Aerosmith, Elton John, The Doors, Rush, Queen, etc, and I love all the black ’70s soul and funk shit, like Curtis Mayfield, The Commodores, Parliament, Dramatics, Isaac Hayes. I love the shit out of AC/DC and Motörhead, ’70s and ’80s punk shit like Ramones, Dead Boys, Misfits, Circle Jerks, Fear, Adolescents, etc. I like old school country. I like Hank Williams Jr, Johnny Cash and I adore Dwight Yoakam.
I love Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Gustav Holst, etc etc etc.
I like Bob Marley. I love ’80s pop and ’90s alt rock. I love Tom Petty.
I wanna soak up all the groove, all the funk, all the power, all the aggression, all the riffs and beats. I want to know the stories behind their creation. For some reason, I retain all every piece of music-related info I hear. I don’t know why, I just do. I remember stuff I heard on MTV news interviews in the ’80s. I’ve saved all my ’90s/2000’s metal ‘zines. Here’s some:
I genuinely don’t know how to answer when people ask me what I listen to. I’m just going to start saying “Appetite For Destruction.”
That’s the album I bleed and breathe.
What can I say? I’m obsessed with music.
When I was younger, I railed against music I thought sucked. I’ve grown up now, and I’ve come to realize that, in the words of Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir, “Just ‘cuz you don’t like it don’t mean it ain’t no good.”
There’s perhaps more music I despise than music I like. But I refuse to hate on it unless it’s five finger death punch or some other bonehead Chad music to punch drywall to. Even then, whatever.
Can’t stand mumble rap but I can understand kids feeling it. Who cares? Kids gotta do their thing. It ain’t for me.
So how do I answer the question truthfully without going off on a lengthy tirade? I just shrug and say “Lots of stuff.”
